- 2005/08/04 Chancellor Schröder at DESY: Start of user operation at the VUV-FEL With the symbolic push of a button, German Federal Chancellor Gerhard Schröder handed over the new free-electron laser VUV-FEL at the research center DESY to the scientists yesterday afternoon. “This worldwide unique pioneering facility for free-electron lasers for the generation of X-ray radiation is thus now at the disposal of the scientific users,” commented Professor Albrecht Wagner, Chairman of the DESY Board of Directors, who welcomed the chancellor together with Hamburg’s Science Senator Jörg Dräger, Ph.D.

- 2004/06/22 Young Scientist Honored for Work at DESY The Association of the Friends and Sponsors of DESY awards Ph.D. Thesis Prize This year, the prize of the Association of the Friends and Sponsors of DESY for the best Ph.D. thesis covering the DESY research program goes to Dr. Jürgen Wendland from the Simon Fraser University in Canada. His thesis made a decisive contribution to the explanation of the proton spin, a fundamental property of the proton, one of the elementary particles of matter. The prize was presented during the open session of the Extended Scientific Council at DESY on Monday, June 21.

- 2003/09/28 Open Day an Enormous Success More than 15 000 Visitors Came to DESY Today, more than 15 000 visitors seized the opportunity to look behind the scenes at the Helmholtz research center DESY. Around 600 DESY employees were in action to present “their” research center, answer questions and care for the welfare of their guests.

- 2003/07/01 DESY Director Dr. Hans von der Schmitt’s Term of Office Ended Der Leiter des Bereichs "Technische Infrastruktur" feierte seinen Abschied The 5-year term of office of Dr. Hans von der Schmitt, member of the DESY-Directorate and head of the technical infrastructure division (Z-division) ended on June 30. He was specially concerned with the continuous increase of supply, customer orientation and labor efficiency of the technical service groups while resources were running short. His goal was to strenghten DESY for future tasks and major projects.
- 2003/05/22 Young Scientists Honored Association of the Friends and Sponsors of DESY awards Ph.D. Thesis Prize Good news for two up-and-coming scientists at HERA: This year’s Ph.D. Thesis Prize goes to Dr. Lara De Nardo and Dr. Oscar González López for their work carried out at the HERA particle accelerator. This is the ninth time that the Association of the Friends and Sponsors of DESY presents the award for an excellent Ph.D. thesis covering research at DESY. The chairman of the Association, Prof. Erich Lohrmann, presented the prize during the open session of the Extended Scientific Council in Zeuthen on Thursday, May 22.

- 2003/04/25 More Flexibility for DESY From now on, budgeting at DESY will be more efficient. As the President of the Helmholtz Association, Professor Walter Kröll, informed middle of April, the 15 associated research centers will be granted a wider margin in matters of finance and human resources. The Budget Committee of the German Bundestag has agreed to abstain from mandatory staff appointment schemes in the future.

- 2003/04/04 New Director General of KEK Long-time DESY Guest Scientist Professor Yoji Totsuka Since 1 April there is a new man at the wheel of the Japanese accelerator center KEK: Director General Professor Yoji Totsuka. He is the successor of Professor Hirotaka Sugawara who was the successful leader of the laboratory for many years.
- 2003/03/27 Long-time DESY Guest Scientist honored Brian Foster awarded with the Max Born Medal and Prize For his outstanding contribution to particle physics, in particular for his experimental work at DESY, the British physicist Prof. Brian Foster has been awarded the Max Born Medal and Prize. This prize is presented by the German Physical Society (DPG) and the British Institute of Physics. The 49-years old researcher received the prize on Wednesday, March 26, at the DPG Meeting in Hanover. The particle physicist from the University of Bristol has been working at DESY for a long time.

- 2003/03/07 A New Record for HERA Three Interaction Regions with Polarized Positrons The week of 24 February-3 March brought a major step forward for the exploitation of HERA II: longitudinal positron spin polarization has been obtained simultaneously at all three positron (electron) interaction regions equipped with rotator magnets and at the routine beam energy of 27.5 GeV.

- 2003/01/06 Gerhard Materlik Receives X-ray Award from the University of Würzburg Auszeichnung für herausragende wissenschaftliche Leistungen Congratulations to Prof. Dr. Gerhard Materlik. In December, the University of Würzburg honored the physicist with the X-ray award presented by the university. Materlik - associate director of HASYLAB until 2001 - received the prize, endowed with 5000 Euro, for his outstanding scientific work. For the first time since 1959 and on occasion of their 600th birthday, the Würzburg University revived the X-ray award.

The 38-year-old lawyer will assume his new office on June 1, 2002. Since the beginning of April, Helmut Krech is the Administration Director of the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF) in Grenoble.

- 2004/11/12 HERA Experiment ZEUS Achieves Successful Mass Production on a Computing Grid The ZEUS collaboration has for the first time achieved the production of more than one million of simulated electron-proton collision events on a computing grid. R. Mankel (DESY): The computing load was shared between the sites of DESY, Rutherford Appleton Laboratory (RAL, Oxfordshire), ScotGrid (Glasgow), University College London (UCL) and University of Hamburg. The production demonstrates feasibility and the huge potential of grid technology for an experiment that is currently taking data.

- 2005/01/24 Nine Countries Plan to Participate in the XFEL Important Milestone for the European Research Project An important milestone has been reached on the way towards the realization of the European X-ray laser XFEL: With France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Poland, Spain, Sweden, and Switzerland, and the United Kingdom, nine countries have signed a Memorandum of Understanding in which they agree to jointly prepare the foundation of the facility. “Even if this declaration of intent is not yet a formal pledge, we are confident that these countries will then also participate in the construction and operation of the XFEL,” declared the chairman of the international XFEL steering committee, Dr. Hermann Schunck from the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research.

Among all the competitors for the much-coveted development funds, the projects “EUROFEL” and “EUROTeV” were ranked first and second, respectively, in the referees’ evaluation. From 2005 on, they will receive around Euro 9 million each, spread over a period of three years. This corresponds to about one third of the total costs estimated for each project. The remaining two thirds will be born by the participating research institutions.
- 2004/02/09 Start for Europeanization of the X-Ray Laser Project at DESY European Countries Want to Realize Participation in the Proposed XFEL On February 2, 2004, the constituent meeting of the XFEL Steering Committee (SC-XFEL) took place in Darmstadt. Chairman of this steering committee is Dr. Hermann Schunck, Federal Ministry of Education and Research. The committee made it his business to realize a European collaboration for the planned XFEL project. The goal in 2005 is to sign a Memorandum of Understanding for the mutual funding of the construction and operation of the new research facility. This declaration of intent is a prerequisite for the final approval of the XFEL project. The X-ray laser should start commissioning in 2012.

- 2004/08/20 Worldwide Consensus of Particle Physicists Superconductivity for Future Particle Accelerator Project ILC Today, the International Committee for Future Accelerators (ICFA) announced at a scientific conference in Beijing that the planned International Linear Collider (ILC) is to be realized in superconducting technology. This decision is of great importance for DESY and its international partners, since they developed this technology together and successfully tested it at the TESLA Test Facility (TTF) in Hamburg. The ILC is the next major project of particle physics. No decision has yet been taken on the realization and site of the facility. As the next step, scientists will now join forces to develop the technical design of the project as rapidly as possible.

- 2003/02/05 Research and Development for the TESLA Detector Test Measurements with a Strong Magnetic Field Possible The R & D work for the TESLA detector made an important step forward: an international team started a successful test series towards one of the detector components, the so-called time projection chamber (TPC). The strong magnetic field needed for this purpose is produced by a superconducting magnet.
