DESY Director Prof. Dr. Albrecht Wagner (65) was honoured with the Federal Cross of Merit, First Class, of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany for his prominent contributions, “at present and for the future, to one of the most important research centers in Europe and to high energy physics at large.” According to the declaration of the Order, Prof. Wagner’s numerous contacts to many countries had rendered outstanding services to Germany’s prestige in the world. Yesterday, during a ceremonial act at DESY, the decoration was handed out by Prof. Dr. Frieder Meyer-Krahmer, State Secretary of the Federal Ministry for Education and Research (BMBF).

Particle physicist Albrecht Wagner, who has been Chairman of DESY’s Board of Directors since 1999, is spokesman of the international TESLA Technology Collaboration. The collaboration, lead-managed by DESY, has made decisive contributions for the development of the superconducting TESLA accelerator technology which is to be used in both, the European X-ray laser XFEL and the International Linear Collider ILC.
Prof. Albrecht Wagner has a decisive part in this success. The declaration states that “due to his expert knowledge, his untiring commitment, his acknowledged authority and his exemplary care, the excellent international reputation of DESY could be preserved and enhanced. This is also a special merit of the DESY crew, highly motivated by A. Wagner.”
