He was specially concerned with the continuous increase of supply, customer orientation and labor efficiency of the technical service groups while resources were running short. His goal was to strenghten DESY for future tasks and major projects.
  • 2003/05/26 Research with Photons DESY's Accelerator "PETRA" to Become a Most Brilliant Light Source Brillanz wird seine Stärke Its strength will be brilliance : From 2007 on, the PETRA accelerator at the Helmholtz research center DESY will be converted into the most brilliant storage-ring-based X-ray source worldwide. Already now , future users of the new light source are coming together to discuss experiments to be carried out at the planned 13 to 15 experimental stations.   • 2003/05/22 DESY in general Young Scientists Honored Association of the Friends and Sponsors of DESY awards Ph.D. Thesis Prize Good news for two up-and-coming scientists at HERA: This year’s Ph.D. Thesis Prize goes to Dr. Lara De Nardo and Dr. Oscar González López for their work carried out at the HERA particle accelerator. This is the ninth time that the Association of the Friends and Sponsors of DESY presents the award for an excellent Ph.D. thesis covering research at DESY. The chairman of the Association, Prof. Erich Lohrmann, presented the prize during the open session of the Extended Scientific Council in Zeuthen on Thursday, May 22.

As the President of the Helmholtz Association, Professor Walter Kröll, informed middle of April, the 15 associated research centers will be granted a wider margin in matters of finance and human resources. The Budget Committee of the German Bundestag has agreed to abstain from mandatory staff appointment schemes in the future.

He is the successor of Professor Hirotaka Sugawara who was the successful leader of the laboratory for many years.
  • 2003/03/27 DESY in general Long-time DESY Guest Scientist honored Brian Foster awarded with the Max Born Medal and Prize For his outstanding contribution to particle physics, in particular for his experimental work at DESY, the British physicist Prof. Brian Foster has been awarded the Max Born Medal and Prize. This prize is presented by the German Physical Society (DPG) and the British Institute of Physics. The 49-years old researcher received the prize on Wednesday, March 26, at the DPG Meeting in Hanover. The particle physicist from the University of Bristol has been working at DESY for a long time.

  • 2003/03/07 DESY in general A New Record for HERA Three Interaction Regions with Polarized Positrons The week of 24 February-3 March brought a major step forward for the exploitation of HERA II: longitudinal positron spin polarization has been obtained simultaneously at all three positron (electron) interaction regions equipped with rotator magnets and at the routine beam energy of 27.5 GeV.

  • 2003/02/05 Linear Collider ILC Research and Development for the TESLA Detector Test Measurements with a Strong Magnetic Field Possible The R & D work for the TESLA detector made an important step forward: an international team started a successful test series towards one of the detector components, the so-called time projection chamber (TPC). The strong magnetic field needed for this purpose is produced by a superconducting magnet.

In December, the University of Würzburg honored the physicist with the X-ray award presented by the university. Materlik - associate director of HASYLAB until 2001 - received the prize, endowed with 5000 Euro, for his outstanding scientific work. For the first time since 1959 and on occasion of their 600th birthday, the Würzburg University revived the X-ray award.
