Mini Workshops

on

Multiple Interactions

and Underlying Events

Meetings and Participants:

Aims and Goals:

The AGK rules provide a connection between Diffraction, Multiple parton Interactions and Saturation effects. However the detailed simulation of Multiple Interactions is far from being understood. The models provided in the PYTHIA and HERWIG/Jimmy Monte Carlo event generators can be tuned to give a reasonable description, but the extrapolation to LHC energies introduces uncertainties of up to a factor of 10 (see HERA-LHC workshop 2004-2005: C.M.Buttar et al., The Underlying Event).

Investigations in the Dipole picture suggest, that even for inclusive quantities like F2 the contribution from multiple interactions can be rather large (~ 10 %) even at large Q2 (see HERA-LHC workshop 2004-2005: H. Kowalski Multiple Scattering in DIS). It is however not yet clear, whether these contribution are already part of the initial conditions of the PDFs and thus do not violate the DIS factorization theorem.

The aim of this series of Mini-Workshops on Multiple Interactions is to clarify the situation, to provide a forum for exchange between the experts and help providing reliable predictions for LHC, before the LHC starts taking data in 2007.
