I´m a member of the DESY-Group "Zentrale Konstruktion- ZM1" and working on the design of RF-couplers for the TESLA-Testfacility (short: TTF). RF-couplers are needed to inject a radio-frequency (Micro-waves with a frequency of 1.3GHz for TESLA) into the cavities. These cavities are the basic components of the accelerator: The electric component of the radio-frequency-field in the cavities accelerates the electrons - almost to the speed of the light!
Several conceptional designs for the couplers are thinkable. The couplers manufactured for TTF are all coaxial-couplers with an inner and outer conductor. The end of the inner coaxial line is an antenna diping into the cavity. For the design we have several requirements, for example requirements from the Ultra-high-vacuum (UHV), reqiurements from the low temperature (RT down to 1.5K), low electrical losses (current, temperature), etc.
