Camp beds for the night shift at FLASH, technical details in the cryogenic hall, researchers’ hands working on sample preparation – on 28 March 2009, 100 amateur photographers took the opportunity to turn their lenses onto “live research” at the first “Science Photo Walk”, organised by DESY and the GKSS Research Centre. The interest to join this event exceeded all expectations. Since not all applicants were able to take part there are plans to repeat the photo walk.

The best “perspectives” were chosen from more than 2500 photos - a collection of fascinating insights into the researchers’ world, from many different viewing angles. To see the 150 best photos, click here.

Ausstellung im Levantehaus

Exhibition in the Levantehaus
The top 50 photos were presented from 7 - 28 May 2009 in the Levantehaus mall in Moenckebergstraße 7 in Hamburg.

Competition
All photographers who sent their pictures to DESY automatically entered the contest. A jury of representatives from the city of Hamburg, the Swiss consulate, the media and science chose their favourite photos. The top three won a prize: a boat trip on the Elbe river with the research ship "Ludwig Prandtl“, courtesy of the GKSS Research Centre.

Public vote
In addition to the competition judged by the official jury there was a public vote in the exhibition. Every visitor could vote for their favourite picture.
