More info for mothers of young children:

If you have a reasonable knowledge of German, buy the publication called "Kind in Hamburg" which gives a multitude of activities for young children and covers such diverse subjects as play areas, nutrition, au-pair possibilities, where to have a teddy-bear repaired and museums of interest for children. If a first child over two years of age attends, they will also consider taking a sibling under two. Mothers are welcome to stay with their children but are still expected to pay.

The Elbe-Einkaufszentrum has a Kindergarten available to shoppers on the second floor (take the lift close to "Toom"). Children from three years of age can be left free-of-charge for up to two hours. MISCELLANEOUS

Kinderkleidermarkt: 14 September, 10H00 to 12H30, in the Harbighalle in Ellerbek. On the corner of Rugenberger Mühlenweg and Moorkampsweg, near Schnellsen.

This month is a good time to visit the Lüneburger Heide, where the heather will be in bloom for the next few weeks. One possibility is to drive to Undeloh (take A7 south, Egestorf turnoff). Undeloh offers walking trails, horse-drawn carriage rides, and bikes to rent. Other walking trails are found throughout the Heide.

Keep fit at the Verein Aktive Freizeit, Bertrand-Russell-Straße 4, tel. 897 711 and 895 594. The distinct advantage of this centre is its proximity to DESY. There's a sauna, swimming pool, fitness studio, yoga, gymnastics class for mothers and umpteen other interesting programmes.

Another possibility is Sport Welt, Holzkoppel 2, 22869 Schenefeld, tel. (040) 830 60 06. Membership of the club is cheaper for those using the facilities between 07H00 and 17H00 mid-week (no restriction for Saturday and Sunday). A babysitting service is also available from 09H30 to 12H30 Monday - Friday. Why not have a look!

A brochure from each sport centre is in the Playgroup file and can be consulted during Playgroup hours (see first page).

If you are looking for inexpensive second-hand items, try "AVIS Annoncen" which is published on Tuesdays and Fridays. It costs DM 3.50 and is available at newsagents and supermarkets which sell newspapers.

Used household appliances - AMIN - at Stresemannstrasse 313 (Hof), tel. 850 83 95, has used refrigerators, freezers, washing machines, dishwashers and stoves. They deliver to your home on a cash on delivery (COD) basis (cash or eurocheque) and give a three month guarantee. It `s on the 111 bus line, stop Schützenstrasse Mitte. Their sign faces toward downtown and says "An- + Verkauf neu + gebraucht", and from there you pass through a red brick arch with a "Behrmann" sign over it and look for a down flight of stairs on your left.

The DESY International Office regularly receives copies of "The Hamburger", a monthly information booklet for residents and visitors written in English. You're welcome to pick up a copy.

c/o B. Parker, MPY, or

The deadline for the September issue is 25 September 1996. Any comments or suggestions are welcome. Thank you.

Should you wish to receive a regular copy of this Newsletter, change address or no longer wish to receive the Newsletter, kindly inform us as soon as possible so we may make the necessary amendments to our mailing list.

The DESY newsletter is produced monthly by volunteers in co-ordination with the International Office. Since the present editors are sometimes out-of-town, we would like to hear from anyone with an interest to help with the workload and if necessary, assume responsibility for publication during our absence. Having a computer at home helps: access to a Macintosh is essential.

This publication is intended primarily for family members of newcomers to DESY, to Germany and to the German language. The opinion expressed in this Newsletter is not necessarily that of DESY. Information included is correct going to print, but it can happen that information subsequently changes. We would therefore suggest that you call in advance to check and avoid a fruitless trip.
