1 July 1996 DESY NEWSLETTER Nr. 74

COFFEE MORNING

A coffee morning is held at DESY on every second Thursday of the month in the Lounge of Guest House I (tel. 8998 43 76) from 10H00 to 12H00. It provides an ideal opportunity to meet new and not-so-new members of the DESY community. Drinks and snacks are offered. Children are welcome but we suggest you bring a few toys to keep them occupied.

All DESY women and wives are invited to our next Coffee Morning which will be held Thursday, 10 July. The hostesses this month will be Nancy Sen (USA) and Nancy Hunter (USA). Everyone is welcome -- especially newcomers!

Should anyone be interested in organizing a future coffee morning, could they please contact one of the editors (see back page). Thank you!

PLAYGROUP

Are you new to DESY? Do you want to meet new people, exchange or receive information? If so, come to the DESY Kindergarten/Play-group House on Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 10H00 to 13H00 or call the Kindergarten & Playgroup House between these times on 8998 27 80. There are plenty of toys, sandpits and playground equipment and an international group of people speaking many languages. Although the playgroup is primarily intended for mothers with young children, any newcomer should come and gather useful information from those attending. Drinks are provided and a small contribution of DM 2.- is asked for each visit or DM 10.- per month. For more information please call Rachel Frost or Shari Weisend.

Russian conversation evening

This time we shall meet in the Lounge of Guesthouse I on Monday 7 July at 19H30. The main aim of this get-together is to speak Russian (or get a chance to hear the language for those who are learning it). However, you may bring something to eat if you like. Coffee and tea will be provided. Remember that there is no kitchen, so stick to food which can be eaten cold.

Lasst uns Hamburg entdecken! - Discovering Hamburg! Many thanks to Margrit Eichler for arranging all our fun and interesting tours around the city. It is with sadness that we say farewell to Margrit, as she heads back to Switzerland at the end of the month. We wish you all the best!

The DESY Children's Party was a great success! We would like to thank Josephine Zilberkweit and her team for starting it all, and also the numerous parents and other persons without whom it would not have been possible. Josephine writes "I would also like to give a BIG thank you to all parents, friends and colleagues, who organized games and activities and, most important, helped with cleaning up! Also thank you to the DESY carpenter shop and the DESY Gas Stores (for the helium) and a final thank you to the Verein der Freunde und Föderer DESYS for sponsoring the party.

Summertime Fun! The 1997 DESY outdoor volleyball season has begun. Games are normally played on Fridays at 6 pm behind Guest House 1 (near the Kantine). Anyone can play. Questions?

NEWS FROM DESY GUEST SERVICES

MONEY MACHINES: There are presently heated discussions in banking circles about a possible increase in service charges at money machines, for customers of other banks (i.e. the customer's bank account is with the Deutsche Bank and he wants to get money from a machine belonging to the Commerzbank). A decision should be made by the middle of July and, at the worst, it will mean that you have to pay a service charge of up to DM 7,-. Please check the notices next to the money machine to be certain you know how much you will be charged!

LETTERS AND PACKETS SENT TO GUESTS C/O DESY: To make certain that you receive all the letters and packets you are awaiting, we strongly suggest that you ALWAYS include your Group Address as part of your DESY address.

The deadline for the August issue is 25 July 1997. Any comments or suggestions are welcome. Thank you.

Should you wish to receive a regular copy of this Newsletter, change address or no longer wish to receive the Newsletter, kindly inform us as soon as possible so we may make the necessary amendments to our mailing list.

The DESY newsletter is produced monthly by volunteers in co-ordination with the International Office. Since the present editors are sometimes out-of-town, we would like to hear from anyone with an interest to help with the workload and if necessary, assume responsibility for publication during our absence. Having a computer at home helps: access to a Macintosh is essential.

This publication is intended primarily for family members of newcomers to DESY, to Germany and to the German language. The opinion expressed in this Newsletter is not necessarily that of DESY. Information included is correct going to print, but it can happen that information subsequently changes. We would therefore suggest that you call in advance to check and avoid a fruitless trip.
