Second Announcement
Second Workshop on Medium Energy Electron Cooling
12 - 14 February 1996
Fermilab, Batavia Illinois
===============================================================================
Goals
-----
Fermilab initiated an R & D effort in electron cooling for 8 GeV antiprotons
in April '95. There is a strong programmatic interest in developing a working
system within about three years. Because the required parameters represent
a significant step beyond current practice, no institution, certainly not
Fermilab, has all the necessary experience. The R & D program is a serious
effort to collect the needed experience, but we expect that this and later
workshops will help to establish a more systematic and general understanding of
the technology and the basic physics. The Laboratory is sponsoring the workshop
to get the advice and criticism on our specific project from the several places
with relevant experience. However, we believe that there are other facilities
that will be interested in exploiting the extended technology. It is our
additional goal to foster the interested community and return to it the benefit
we derive from our experience.
General Organization
-------------------
Individual sessions will be initiated by a session chair / keynote speaker.
Prepared contributions from attendees are welcome and will be distributed into
the appropriate session and scheduled by the session chair. There will be
formal proceedings (i. e., not duplicates of overheads) distributed within a
few weeks as a Fermilab physics note. The schedule will allow for extended
discussion. The working list of topics is
1. Electron cooling theory: Review and(?) comparison with stochastic cooling
2. Electron cooling of GeV ion beams (general)
a) electron beam energy regulation
b) alignment requirements
c) run-away cooling; heating techniques
3. Specific GeV beam electron cooling projects: FNAL,LISS,...
4. High intensity, low emittance electron guns
5. High intensity, multi-MeV electron accelerators and recirculators
6. High intensity, high efficiency electron collectors
7. Beam optics of transport of high intensity, low emittance beams
8. Transport of high intensity, low emittance multi-MeV electron beams in
periodic focusing channels
a) theory
b) practice
The keynote speakers have not all been identified and so the precise allocation
of topics into sessions is not known. However, there will certainly be two
sessions in parallel at some times. The second day is likely to be devoted to
these smaller groups.
Advice on topics, speakers and organization has been provided by an informal
organizing committee consisting of
Nikolai Dikansky, Budker Institute
James MacLachlan, Fermilab
Dag Reistad, the Svedberg Laboratory
Peter Schwandt, Indiana University
