On October 7th a KET-Meeting on the future program of HEP @ DESY for the years 2005 to 2009 was held. The following conclusions were drawn:
Given the positive commitment of the federal government for the TESLA XFEL, but the unclear future of the TESLA Linear Collider, the future of HEP at DESY is currently open. Therefore a panel consisting of representatives of DESY and the universities involved in HEP at DESY is working on a proposal for the future of HEP at DESY. We would like to contribute constructively to this ongoing debate with a proposal from YPP.
The Kommitee für Elementarteilchenphysik (KET) is a panel which has the following goals:
"Das KET findet und formuliert in engem Kontakt mit der Gemeinschaft der deutschen Teilchenphysikerinnen und -physiker und mit dem Ziel größtmöglichen Konsenses deren gemeinsame Ziele und Interessen und vertritt sie repräsentativ nach außen."
Which means that the KET is a quite powerful panel, that helps to coordinate the activities of our field with the political institutions. Currently only physicists with a PhD degree are eligible to vote or be elected. Our aim is to organize the election of one or two PhD students as adjoint members into this panel.
In order to achieve this, a german-wide organization of PhD students has to be evoked.
On Tuesday February 25th Sabine Lammers and Philip Bechtle have been elected new YPP DESY representatives. We want to thank Gudi, who was the YPP DESY representative before, for her hard and successful work!
On December 6th we had our Podium discussion about the new German Hochschulrahemgesetz in the main auditorium. Speakers were Dirk Schueller from the BMBF, Christian Scherf from the DESY directorate, Hartmut Halfmeier, Chancellor of the University of Hamburg, Wilhelm Franz, Wissenschaftsbehörde Hamburg and Thorsten Ohl from the University of Würzburg. A summary of this event is available here.
On Wednesday October 23rd at 4pm we will meet in the Seminar room Bldg.1b/Room 4b to discuss the planned podium discussion about the new German HRG (invitation and details of the discussion here), which shall take place on December 6th in the main auditorium. Any other subject might be discussed as well.
June, 14th, 2:30 p.m., Building 2 at DESY, HH, Seminarroom 2, 'TESLA Seminar'
On July 17 our minister of research, Edelgard Bulmahn is coming to Hamburg
and will talk about our new 'Hochschulrahmengesetz' which defines
the structure
of our future possibilities for research and permanent positions.
Since, probably, most of us do NOT exactly know what
the rules of this new law are, we propose to get together and
study and discuss about this new law.
Please come to our first meeting, also
new ideas and thoughts concerning our future are welcome!
It occured to the YPP members who where present at the talk of Edelgard Bulmahn that there
seem to be lots of differences in the interpretation of the new 'Hochschulrahmengesetz', especially
concerning the employment of young scientists.
While the ministry e.g. says that it would be no problem to employ scientists after the famous '12th year'
on non-permanent positions, the administration of institutions like DESY and universities seem to think
differtent. Therefore the idea was to invite a speaker from the ministry of research, the chancellor of the
University, Christian Scherf from DESY, someone from the 'Behörde für Wissenschaft und Forschung Hamburg'
and one young scientist to a podium discussion at DESY.
A date is not yet known, probably it will take place in october 2002.
