DESY User Interest Group Formed
is rapidly becoming the most popular
object-oriented programming language, and there are several projects
within High Energy Physics [HEP] using it. General questions of
applications to HEP are discussed in an international HEPnet group,
hepnet.lang.c++.
In August '93, the ``DESY User Interest Group'' [DESY++] has been
formed as a group of physicists and computer scientists working with
at DESY. The group uses the local newsgroup desy.c++
( DESY.CPP on VAX) for announcements and discussion.
The agenda of this interest group includes:
- Compiler questions: problems in porting/understanding/performance
between the various compilers at DESY.
- and OOP applications at DESY: at the outset, group members
have posted descriptions of their work and background. A concise
overview on research activities employing has been written up.
- Book reviews and articles.
- Programming/learning : no question is too small for this
group. Information on courses in the Hamburg area (such as J.
Milewski's upcoming course for Hamburg University), and suitable
tutorial material.
- Lectures/Talks: as a first instance, the video lectures for the
GISMO toolkit for Monte Carlo analysis and simulation will be
shown at DESY in October.
- Informal meetings: these shall take place irregularly and on
demand only. Minutes of the first meeting can be retrieved from
/ftp.desy.de in file /pub/c++/news/930902.txt.
DESY is also hosting a wealth of documents on and especially
HEP applications of , which are
accessible via the World Wide Web. If you have further questions or
suggestions, please contact Marcus Speh <marcus@x4u.desy.de>.
