WLS Fiber

    Wave length shifter (WLS) fibers guide the light flashes produced in the plastics scintillators to the photo sensor (PMT or SiPM). WLSs are glued into milled groves of the scintillator plate. As shown in the figure, the scintillation light (green) is absorbed in the WLS (lower part) and then shifted to longer wavelengths (emission spectrum in the upper part). The emission spectrum of the WLS is better adapted to the wavelength sensitivity of the photo sensor which results in a higher photon efficiency.
