ATLAS thesis award for Luisa Moreira De Carvalho

On February 20, Luisa Moreira De Carvalho received the ATLAS thesis award for one of the best theses within the ATLAS collaboration in 2024 for her thesis on “Measurements of Higgs boson properties in associated production with top quarks with the ATLAS detector”.

Luisa received her doctoral degree with LIP in Portugal. She participated in several analyses concerning the production of Higgs bosons in association with top quark pairs with the goal of probing the top-Higgs Yukawa coupling. She contributed to the first differential cross-section measurement of this process using the LHC dataset collected between 2015 and 2018, and focusing on the Higgs boson decay to a pair of b-quarks. In this analysis, she collaborated closely with the ATLAS group at DESY. In addition, she studied the CP properties of the top-Higgs Yukawa coupling and measured an important background for these measurements, namely the production of top-quark pairs together with charm quarks.

In December 2023 she joined DESY as a fellow. For her research at DESY, Luisa has decided to explore a different corner of experimental particle physics to broaden her scope, and joined the Belle II experiment at the second generation B-meson factory, SuperKEKB electron-positron collider in Japan.

Currently, as part of the DESY Belle II group, Luisa is analyzing data collected by the Belle II experiment between 2019 and 2022, studying rare interactions between fermions that change the flavor of the particle without changing its electric charge. Luisa is also in charge of the Pixel Detector (PXD) group lab in DESY HERA West Hall, offering a test facility to operate the PXD modules with exactly the same signal readout chain and Data Acquisition (DAQ) system as employed at KEK.
