ATLAS Award for DESY physicist Tadej Novak
DESY fellow Dr. Tadej Novak has been awarded with one of this year's ATLAS Outstanding Achievement Awards for his outstanding contributions to the development and integration of the software dedicated to the upcoming upgrade of the ATLAS experiment at the LHC at CERN.
Novak was one the recipient of one of the only nine awards conferred this year. For reference, the ATLAS collaboration has more than 3,000 members, 80 of them at DESY in Hamburg and Zeuthen. This ATLAS award honors specifically outstanding contributions to detectors and common software.ATLAS and the other LHC experiments are gearing up to collect new data at the unprecedented centre-of-mass energy of 13.6 TeV. The third LHC data taking run started this month and is expected to continue throughout 2025, pushing once more the boundaries of precision and discovery potential. However, even with this exciting operation phase upon us, the high-energy community is already preparing for the next generation of experiment upgrades.
The next data-taking run is expected to deliver an increase of about five times in the collision rate. This will require a new generation of detectors able to withstand unprecedented levels of radiation while improving the current measurement precision, such as the new silicon strip detector being built at DESY. New software is required to understand and reconstruct the collision products that will be recorded by those detectors.
Tadej Novak, from the ATLAS group at DESY, led the integration and development of the upgrade software into the overall ATLAS software framework. Such integration ensures an efficient use of the experiment’s resources and eases the propagation of novel development between the current detector and its future upgrade.
