Freigeist Fellowship for Daria Gorelova

Volkswagen Foundation funds junior research group

The Volkswagen Foundation has awarded Daria Gorelova from the DESY Photon Science division a Freigeist Fellowship. At the Center for Free-Electron Laser Science (CFEL) at DESY, Daria Gorelova is currently working on ultrafast processes in solids and molecules. In particular, she uses quantum mechanical methods to investigate the characterisation possibilities of these processes with the special X-ray light that can be generated by free-electron lasers such as the European XFEL in Hamburg.

Funding from the Volkswagen Foundation will enable Daria Gorelova to set up a junior research group at the University of Hamburg. In her future research, she would like to investigate microscopic phenomena that could be of significance in the field of renewable energies.

The Volkswagen Foundation promotes science and technology in research and teaching. It enables research projects in promising areas and helps scientific institutions to improve the structural conditions for their work. It pays particular attention to young scientists and to cooperation between researchers beyond scientific, cultural and national borders.

The Volkswagen Foundation's Freigeist Fellowships are aimed at exceptional research personalities who move between established research fields and wish to pursue high-risk science. Since 2014, 10 to 15 Freigeist Fellows have been selected annually. Over a maximum of eight years, they receive a total funding of up to 2.2 million euros to set up their own junior research group.
