Professor Volker Soergel, who had been Chair of the DESY Board of Directors from 1981 to 1993, received an honorary doctorate from the University of Hamburg yesterday.

Volker Soergel was honoured for his merits in the close and successful collaboration of DESY and the University of Hamburg and for his contributions to the national and international visibility of Hamburg as a centre of science and research. Under his aegis, the electron-proton storage ring HERA was built in Hamburg, opening up a completely new way to study the structure of the proton. HERA has offered unique research possibilities to students and scientists, also from Hamburg, and significantly strengthened Hamburg as a research location. The building of HERA with considerable international contributions has been a model for other large scientific projects like the X-ray laser European XFEL.

The ceremony took place on 6 April at a colloquium in the DESY auditorium. The invited guests were welcomed by Monika Auweter-Kurz, President of the University of Hamburg and Helmut Dosch, Chair of the DESY Directorate, and were then addressed by the retired Hamburg Senator Hansjörg Sinn, one of the signers of the agreement to build the Hadron Electron Ring Accelerator HERA exactly 25 years before, on 6 April 1984. Josef Rembser, Chair of the DESY Administrative Council in 1984, also gave an address.
