XFEL Plan Approval Published!

Today, the authority for Mining, Energy and Geology in Clausthal-Zellerfeld (LBEG) published the approval statement for the European X-ray laser project XFEL. This statement establishes the legal basis for the construction and operation of the XFEL. “We are very happy about the publication of the approval statement for the XFEL – the project has now taken another major step forward towards its realization,” said DESY Director Albrecht Wagner.
The resolution summarizes the conditions fixed by the LBEG.

In the following two examples:
• The road Flottbeker Drift may be used for the construction site traffic only during the first year after the start of construction.

• Due to new insights into the composition of the soil on the XFEL site in Schenefeld an open excavation pit is no longer of advantage. As suggested by DESY, the corresponding tunnel segment will be realized by using a tunnel boring machine. This reduces the amount of excavated soil very significantly, the traffic to the temporary soil stores will be reduced by around 90 000 vehicle movements. Neither the Düpenau creek nor the road “Am Osdorfer Born” need to be rerouted, and the sunbathing lawn at the swimming pool can be used as usual.
