As of 2003: DESY Associate of the ESRF

ESRF

Since 2003, the Helmholtz-Center DESY is a new associate of the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF) in Grenoble, assuming the office as the successor of the German Research Centre Jülich (FZJ). Germany is one of the 17 member countries of the ESRF and is now represented by DESY in the committee of associates. Representative in the ESRF Council is Prof. Dr. Jochen Schneider, DESY research director and head of the Hamburg Synchrotron Radiation Laboratory (HASYLAB), representative in the Administrative and Finance Committee is Lise-Anne Rump, legal advisor of DESY.

The ESRF was founded at the end of the 1980's as a European association and since then it closely collaborates with HASYLAB. Both countries, France and Germany played a leading role, with a share of 27,5% and 25,5%. After a four-year-period of construction, the phase of operation of the synchrotron radiation source started in 1992 with the first stored electron beam. Today, ERSF provides 40 beam lines fed by wigglers and undulators, which are used by about 3500 scientists every year.
