The Monopole Problem Revisited: Domain Walls to the Rescue

Anja Wachowitz

Grand Unified Theories predict a phase transition in the early universe that produces magnetic monopoles with an abundance far exceeding observational bounds. In this talk, I will explain how domain walls, produced during the same phase transition, can significantly reduce the monopole density. Monopoles can become trapped on domain walls, which then sweep them up as they evolve and eventually collapse. To study the formation and interactions of domain walls and monopoles, I will present recent results from large-scale numerical lattice simulations. These simulations shed light on the efficiency of the sweeping mechanism as a solution to the monopole problem.
