Particle and Astroparticle Physics Colloquium

Video Colloquium: 70 years of X-ray astronomy: From Rockets to eROSITA and Athena

Joern Wilms (ECAP & Remeis-Observatory, University of Erlangen-Nuremberg)

X-rays are an ideal tool to study the extreme regions in the Universe, from the hot gas in galaxy clusters to the accretion flows around black holes, where the spins of black holes can be measured. In this presentation I will be giving an overview of X-ray astronomy. I will present high lights of current X-ray observations, especially with the German eROSITA telescope, and discuss the scientific questions that motivate the next large X-ray astronomy facility, the European Athena mission, which is to be launched in the early 2030s. This is a VIDEO COLLOQUIUM: Connection details at https://desy.zoom.us/j/99616528733 Meeting ID: 996 1652 8733, Meeting Password: 733220
