Two new Helmholtz Young Investigators Groups at DESY

Today, the Helmholtz Association announced its support for a new series of Young Investigators Groups. Again, DESY will take part in this programme with two young scientists.

Yvonne Peters and Noah Chung head the new Young Investigators Groups at DESY.

Yvonne Peters worked at Fermilab and will build up a working group to explore the physics of top quarks. This elementary particle has a surprisingly large mass, thus playing a special role with regard to physics beyond the standard model. As a member of the ATLAS Collaboration, the group of Yvonne Peters will use data from the LHC detector to analyse the properties of the top quark and its role on the way to new physics.

The working group of Gouqing (Noah) Chang will be active in the field of photon science. The research goal is to develop optical technologies which allow for very compact extreme-ultraviolet and X-ray sources. Nanoscopic investigations in the field of structure and dynamics of materials are so far only possible at large scale facilities as synchrotrons and free-electron lasers. Measuring stations at sources as PETRA III and FLASH are therefore constantly overbooked. Noah Chang´s group will develop the basis for the so called table top equipment which will provide extremely intensive UV and X-ray light to numerous research groups.

Both Young Investigators Groups are funded with the sum of 250 000 Euros for a period of five years; half of it coming from the Helmholtz Association and the other half from DESY.
