   Short description of the project the student should work on  :

	The Large Hadron Collider is the world largest particle accelerator colliding beams of protons,
	located at CERN.The LHC will provide a rich physics potential ranging from more precise measurements 
	of the parameters of the Standard Model of particle physics (model describing the building blocks of matter),
	to the searches of potential new physics phenomena. The interpretation of the LHC results will 
	deeply depend on a detailed understanding of the highly complex structure of proton.
	ATLAS is one of the general purpose detectors of the LHC.

	For the interested applicant, this project offers more insight into the structure of the proton 
	and it  focuses on the determination of the proton constituents from the ATLAS precise measurements
	sensitive to quark, antiquark and gluon dynamics. 
		

	At DESY there is a unique valuable expertise on proton structure from the former electron-proton collider 
	combined with expertise gained at the Tevatron on proton-antiproton collider physics. A dedicated analysis
	framework is set up and ready to be fully used for abundant new data collected from LHC data in 2011.

	The project combines statistical and physics knowledge to better interpret the results. The student is also
	offered the possibility to contribute to the development of the tools.
