   Short description of the project the student should work on  :

At the International Linear Collider (ILC) it is planned to use spin polarized electron and positron beams to study physics processes. The DESY FLC group developes a Compton polarimeter to measure the polarization of the beams very precisely. It turned out that the non-linear behaviour of photo multipliers is the main contribution to the uncertainty of this polarimeter, which is required to be less than 0.25%. For this reason an accurate calibration of the photo multipliers is essential. In this context two different concepts are pursued: a dedicated LED calibration system for a gas-filled Cherenkov detector and additionally a "self-calibrating" quartz Cherenkov detector. The prospective student will have the opportunity to contribute in both hardware development as well as data analysis.

The work in the laboratory will make up an important share of the project, therefore some practical experience in this area is expected. Experience with C++ / data analysis is helpful but not essential.
