Request for a DESY Summer Student in 2012 --------------------------------------------------------------- Name : Shaojun Lu email : shaojun.lu@desy.de Tel : 1641 Room : O1.549 DESY-Group/Experiment : FLC/CALICE/AHCAL (Ties Behnke) ---------------------------------------------------------------- Short description of the project the student should work on : The Monte Carlo method has been heavily used in modern particle phsyics experiments for the optimization of detectors, and to help the physicists to understand the performance of the detector. A key to this is the comparison of simulation with real data from detector prototypes. The Geant4 toolkit is a framework for the simulation of the interaction of particles with matter, and is widely used by modern experiments. The ILD group at the International Linear Collider (ILC) project has implemented a framework to use the Geant4 toolkit to simulate the detector. The CALICE collaboration has successfully used this framework called "Mokka" to simulate different calorimeter prototype. A second generation prototype of the analog hadronic calorimeter will be constructed and tested with beam this year. This requires significant updates to the existing simulation programs. At the same time fundamental changes are envisioned to make the simulation more flexible and easier to use. We expect the summer student to work on both software implementation of the simulation and the analysis. The summer student will have the chance to participate in the ongoing development on both hardware and software for today?s high energy physic experiments. Some prior knowledge of programming will be an advantage. ------------------------------------------------------------------ Physics / Computing/ Engineering Content of the project : Computing ------------------------------------------------------------------ Special Qualifications expected from the student ( Computing,...) : Some programming experience, in particular C++. ------------------------------------------------------------------ Supervisor(s) during the project (17/07/12 - 6/09/12) : Name: Shaojun Lu Tel: 1641 email : shaojun.lu@desy.de
