   Short description of the project the student should work on  :

The field of particle acceleration by laser or beam-driven plasma wakes has seen remarkable progress in recent years. Nowadays, acceleration gradients exceeding 10 GV/m can be readily achieved, which has led to the development of compact, centimeter-scale plasma accelerators yielding femtosecond-duration, GeV-energy electron beams with up to 100 pC of charge and a normalized emittance on the order of 1 mm mrad rms.

Of particular importance for this area of research is control over the plasma medium, in which the acceleration takes place. Tailored plasma-density profiles allow for the manipulation of a variety of effects that are paramount to the applicability of laser-plasma-based acceleration techniques, such as particle injection, laser guiding, and electron-wake dephasing.

The summer student working on this project will help to refine and develop the laser-machining setup being used for tailored plasma-target fabrication.

   Physics / Computing/ Engineering  Content of the project :

- Development of computer programs for controlling laser-based sapphire-capillary machining.
- Hardware modification and design for the machining setup.
- A good understanding of the physics of laser-plasma accelerators will be developed during the project.

  Special Qualifications expected from the student ( Computing,...) :
 
Interest in lasers, hands-on experimental work, programming. LabView experience is beneficial.
