   Short description of the project the student should work on  :

Free-electron lasers (FELs) are usually operated in the so-called self-amplified spontaneous radiation (SASE) regime. This results in undesired fluctuations of the light pulses leaving the FEL. The sFLASH project aims to overcome these limitations by initiating ('seeding') the amplification process with well-defined 38nm light pulses from a laser-driven higher-harmonics generation (HHG) source. 

The summer student's project includes the development of data analysis software in MATLAB. This includes the analysis of data collected during our experimental shifts at FLASH but also work related to the preparation of upcoming experiments. 

Other possible tasks/experimental opportunities include
  - calibration of multi-channel plates (MCPs) we use to measure the energy of the generated radiation
  - you can help us to maintain and prepare the experimental setup -- this includes work in the FLASH accelerator tunnel
  - on-line data analysis
  - setting up computer simulations
