Short description of the project the student should work on :

The LHC has started the operation of proton-proton collision at a
center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV in 2010 and already accumulated
5 fb-1 of data by the end of 2011. This year the LHC will operate
at 8 TeV and collect even more data.
This provides a unique opportunity to study particle physics phenomena
at the highest energy which allows searches for new physics as well as
precise measurements of standard model processes.

We are investigating the production of W boson associated with jets
in particular jets originating from heavy quarks (c or b quarks) aiming
for a precise measurement of the cross section.

The student will work on experimental methods to identify heavy quark
jets using ATLAS data and the understanding of the background
(mainly top pair production) to such measurements. We would also like
to study how this channel contributes as a background to other processes
like W+(H->bb).

Special Qualifications expected from the student ( Computing,...) :

The work requires a basic understanding of particle physics
phenomenology and writing analysis programs in C++.
Experiences with programming languages and the analysis framework
ROOT would be appreciated but he/she can also learn it during
the summer student program.
