   DESY-Group/Experiment : ATLAS

   ----------------------------------------------------------------

Short description of the project the student should work on :

With the mass range for the SM Higgs limited to 115-131 GeV,
the Higgs decay into two photons is one of the promising channels
for Higgs searches with the data taken this year at ATLAS.
Current searches are based on the diphoton invariant mass spectrum,
as well as the transverse momentum of the diphoton system.
However, also angular variables can be used to improve the
sensitivity of the analysis. The summer student will study the
use of angular variables in the H->gammagamma search, both to
quantify possible analysis improvements as well as potential
biases from correlations between the invariant mass and the
   angular variables for the background.

Physics / Computing/ Engineering Content of the project :

During his/her stay the summer student will become acquainted with
common data analysis aspects such as MC simulation, data selection,
purity and efficiency determination and signal searches.

  ------------------------------------------------------------------

Special Qualifications expected from the student ( Computing,...) :

Prior knowledge of C++ and root would be very valuable.
