Request for a DESY Summer Student in 2012
   ---------------------------------------------------------------

Name : Dr. Nick Styles email : nicholas.styles@desy.de

   Tel : 3103 Room : 3/33

   DESY-Group/Experiment : ATLAS

   ----------------------------------------------------------------

Short description of the project the student should work on :

The student will perform simulation studies related to the design
of the Inner Tracker for the High-Luminosity LHC. These will consist
of performance comparisons between different variations of the basic
Inner Tracker layout (e.g. changing number/position of endcap disks)
under high pile-up conditions (~140 collisions per bunch crossing).

  ------------------------------------------------------------------

Physics / Computing/ Engineering Content of the project :

The student will learn about the principles behind the operation
of tracking detectors, and different sensor technologies (pixel,
microstrip, etc). They will become familiar with the simulation
of particle interactions with matter in Geant4, and the procedures
for the production of Monte Carlo data in High-Energy physics
	experiments.

  ------------------------------------------------------------------

Special Qualifications expected from the student ( Computing,...) :

Some familiarity with Object-Oriented programming (C++, Python
and the ROOT analysis framework in particular) advantageous,
	but not a necessity.
