    Short description of the project the student should work on  :


We study the application of novel semi-conductor based photo-detectors 
such as Silicon Photomultipliers and SPAD photo-sensors implemented in 
CMOS technology to time-of-flight Positron Emission Tomography 
(ToF-PET). Currently we are working on two project:
1) Building and commissioning of a TOF-PET test device featuring SiPM 
read-out
2) Developement of a novel multimodal endoscopic probes for simultaneous 
PET/ultrasound imaging for image-guided interventions. The 
ENDO-TOFPET-US project is a collaborative and interdisciplinary effort 
of 13 institutes in Europe. DESY is work package leader for WP5, and is 
responsible for the detector integration.

    Physics / Computing/ Engineering  Content of the project :


The student will work on the experimental characterization of a ToFPET 
    detector module consisting of a matrix of scintillating crystals 
which are read out individually by Silicon Photomultipliers.

   ------------------------------------------------------------------

   Special Qualifications expected from the student ( Computing,...) :

  - C++, Linux
  - experimental physics
  - English and strong communication skills
  - knowledge on interaction of gamma-rays with matter (Compton- and 
                                 Photo-effect)

  not mandatory but highly desirable:

  - laboratory experience
  - basic knowledge on silicon photo-detectors, Silicon Photomultiplier
