Request for a DESY Summer Student in 2011 --------------------------------------------------------------- Name : Mikael Berggren email : mikael.berggren@desy,de Tel : 1597 Room : 1e/O1-535 DESY-Group/Experiment : FLC ---------------------------------------------------------------- Short description of the project the student should work on : One of the most interesting physics opportunities of the ILC is the possibility of SUSY with a rather light spectrum. In such a scenario, many channels would be open at the ILC. The question the arises on how to best study the entire model, in terms of luminousity delivered at different beam-energy and polarisation. Several studies of separate channels have been done in the past, but with the development of a new fast simulation for the ILD detector, we are now in the position to be able to make such a systematic survey. A key observable is the mass of the lightest SUSY particle, and the project of the summer-student would be to investigate the potential of the selectron channel to measure it. ------------------------------------------------------------------ Physics / Computing/ Engineering Content of the project : Physics: To be able to extract the simulated signal process out of a simulated SUSY and SM background. To determine the the selectron and LSP masses, and their uncertainties. Computing: Use of ROOT. Use the SGV fast simulation of the ILD. Some use of the full SW framework of ILD, for checks. Engineering: - ------------------------------------------------------------------ Special Qualifications expected from the student ( Computing,...) : Some programming experience in C++. Some knowledge of Fortran would be beneficial, while not essential. ------------------------------------------------------------------ Other remarks : ------------------------------------------------------------------- Supervisor(s) during the project (20/07/10 - 9/09/10) : Name: Tel: email : Mikael Berggren 1597 mikael.berggren@desy.de Jenny List 3681 jenny.list@desy.de
