   Short description of the project the student should work on  :


The student is expected to contribute to tasks related to the CASTOR calorimeter in CMS. The
following topics could be assigned, depending on the background and special interests of the student:

1. Contribution to the calibration of the CASTOR forward calorimeter at CMS.
Improvement of a selection and fit procedure in the analysis of the CASTOR 
response to beam halo muons. Possibly contribution to a realistic simulation 
of optical processes in the CASTOR quartz sensitive volumes and light guides with a 
comparison of the simulated muon signal to the beam halo data. 

2. Beam background studies with the CASTOR calorimeter. Simulation of beam-gas interactions
in comparison with real data.

   Physics / Computing/ Engineering  Content of the project :

Calorimeter physics, detector read-out (PMT), 
analysis and simulation tools (root, geant4, CMSSW software framework).

  Special Qualifications expected from the student ( Computing,...) :
 
  The student will need some prior knowledge of C++ programming and
  good working proficiency in english. Past experience with ROOT would 
  be very beneficial.
