Its mass has been precisely determined with the help of the LEP accelerator (electron-positron accelerator) in the 90's. At the LHC this particle will continue to play an important role. The Z boson provides, in the first place, a clean signal which helps to understand and calibrate the CMS detector. Furthermore, the production of Z bosons in conjunction with additional particles (so-called 'jets') forms an important background to signals of known processes (eg. top quark production) and 'new' physics (eg. heavy resonances, Higgs bosons, SUSY, ...). The modelling of Z+jets production for the LHC is far from trivial. But with the first LHC collision data recorded by CMS in 2010, and with the amount of data foreseen to be recorded in 2011, it is now possible to study this process in great detail. The student is offered the opportunity to study Z+jets production, i.e. analysing various Z boson/jet spectra from collision data, comparing with (Monte Carlo) simulation, and searching for any unexpected deviation. ------------------------------------------------------------------ Physics / Computing/ Engineering Content of the project : ------------------------------------------------------------------ Special Qualifications expected from the student ( Computing,...) : ------------------------------------------------------------------ Other remarks : ------------------------------------------------------------------- Supervisor(s) during the project (19/07/10 - 8/09/10) : Name: Tel: email :
