Short description of the project the student should work on :

The inner tracker of the CMS experiment is the largest silicon based
tracking device ever built. To make full use of the intrinsic precision
of the 16588 silicon modules, their position has to be known better
than the assembly precision. Furthermore, the analysis of the data
taken in 2010 has shown that especially in the innermost part, the pixel
detector, the geometry displays changes at the micron-scale as a
function of time, which must be correctly accounted for to retain a
high b-quarks tagging performance.
The student will study the data of the coming 2011 data taking and look
for possible time dependent movements.

Physics / Computing/ Engineering Content of the project :
- high precision tracking for tagging of heavy flavours
- modular computing in a highly distributed environment
- use of application software of a large experiment

Special Qualifications expected from the student ( Computing,...) :
- object-oriented programming skills needed
- experience with C++, python and the ROOT program are helpful
