  Short description of the project the student should work on  :

  The planned luminosity upgrade of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) 
  at CERN will increase the demands on the performance of the
  upgraded detectors. Among others, it is essential to develop new,
  more radiation-hard silicon trackers, which are able to maintain a 
  very good tracking peformance in a very harsh radiation environment. 

  The CMS groups at DESY and the University of Hamburg are involved 
  in upgrade activities of the CMS detector. The envisaged summer student
  project will integrate in a campaign, where silicon structures of various
  thicknesses and material types are characterized and compared before and
  after irradiation with neutrons and protons. The student will be involved 
  in the following measurements and analyses:
	- Current-Voltage characteristics at different temperatures
	- Capacitance-Voltage characteristics at different temperatures and
	  frequencies
	- Measurement of the signal development using the Transient Current 
	  Technique (TCT)
	- Extraction and Interpretation of the bulk current, the depletion 
	  voltage, evaluation of the electric field, charge carrier trapping.

  Physics / Computing/ Engineering  Content of the project :

 
   - Principles and operation of a silicon diode, silicon tracking detectors 	
   - basic electronic measurement circuits
   - signal generation and signal development in silicon devices

   - Computer-aided readout with Labview
   - Basic analysis of experimental data with Excel and ROOT
   - Higher-level data processing algorithms (optional)

   - Basic knowledge of programming (Labview and/or C++ helpful but not necessary)
