Request for a DESY Summer Student in 2011 --------------------------------------------------------------- Name : Martin Wildt, Wolfgang Ehrenfeld email : martin.wildt@desy.de, wolfgang.ehrenfeld@desy.de Tel : 1544/4845 Room : 3/33, 3/120 DESY-Group/Experiment : ATLAS ---------------------------------------------------------------- Short description of the project the student should work on : Since one year the LHC is delivering pp collisons to the ATLAS experiment. The expected amount of data in 2011 will significantly increase. Already up the the summer 2011 the current dataset will be enlarged and many searches for new physics will become sensitive. The summer student will contribute to the ongoing search for the di-photon with large missing transverse energy final state as predicted in supersymmetry and large extra dimensions. He/she will study the calorimeter performance and investigate the possibilty to use the calorimeter cell timing to measure the production time of photons compared to the nominal interaction time. A deviation from it is a clear hint for long lived particles, as neutralinos, decaying into photons. ------------------------------------------------------------------ Physics / Computing/ Engineering Content of the project : The main emphasis of this project is on data analyis with a good understanding of the ATLAS liquid argon calorimert. ------------------------------------------------------------------ Special Qualifications expected from the student ( Computing,...) : The work requires a basic understanding of particle physics phenomenology and writing analysis programs in C++. Experiences with programming languages and the analysis framework ROOT would be appreciated but he/she can also learn it during the summer student program. ------------------------------------------------------------------ Other remarks : ------------------------------------------------------------------- Supervisor(s) during the project (19/07/11 - 8/09/11) : Name: Martin Wildt Tel: 4845 email : martin.wildt@desy.de
