Request for a DESY Summer Student in 2011 --------------------------------------------------------------- Name : Takanori Kono email : takanori.kono@desy.de Tel : 4669 Room : 03/119 DESY-Group/Experiment : ATLAS ---------------------------------------------------------------- Short description of the project the student should work on : The LHC has started the operation of proton-proton collision at a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV in 2010 and is planning to continue the operation through out 2011 and 2012. This provides a unique opportunity to study particle physics phenomena at the highest energy which allows various searches for new physics as well as precise measurements of standard model processes. The production of W boson associated with jets is a main source of background to many channels for searching new physics such as the search for Higgs boson or supersymmetry. Moreover, the production mechanism of W+jets events varies a lot when there is a jet coming from heavy quarks (c or b quark). The student will work on experimental methods to reconstruct heavy quark jets using ATLAS data in order to measure the cross section of W+jets production and also investigate how they contribute as backgrounds to other channels. ------------------------------------------------------------------ Physics / Computing/ Engineering Content of the project : 70 % / 30 % / 0 % ------------------------------------------------------------------ Special Qualifications expected from the student ( Computing,...) : The work requires a basic understanding of particle physics phenomenology and writing analysis programs in C++. Experiences with programming languages and the analysis framework ROOT would be appreciated but he/she can also learn it during the summer student program. ------------------------------------------------------------------ Other remarks : ------------------------------------------------------------------- Supervisor(s) during the project (19/07/11 - 8/09/11) : Name: Takanori Kono Tel: 4669 email : takanori.kono@desy.de
