Request for a DESY Summer Student in 2011 --------------------------------------------------------------- Name : Sebastian Johnert email : sebastian.johnert@desy.de Tel : 3169 Building/Room : 03/039 DESY-Group/Experiment : ATLAS ---------------------------------------------------------------- Short description of the project the student should work on : The summerstudent will work on generator studies and MC uncertainties of pp->W->taunu and pp->Z->tautau processes and will check the tau behaviours at center of mass energies of the LHC using the HepMCAnalysis Tool. Tau leptons play an important role in the final states in the search for new particles and new physics like the SM Higgs (H->tautau) or supersymmetrie (SUSY). Therefore SM taus (e.g. in the decays W->taunu or Z-tautau) have to be well understood. The HepMCAnalysis Tool is a package developed by the DESY ATLAS group for MC generator validation and comparisons. It allocates a stable, easy comprehensible and extensible software environment for generator studies. The HepMCAnalysis Tool provides a class library of generator studies for different physics processes which are relevant for tuning and validation. These analyses covers a large area of physics aspects (hard scattering, parton shower, fragmentation, ...). The analyses are based on the generator independent HepMC data format and so they allow a direct comparison between different MC generators. Programs to run a generator and to generate events in the HepMC data format are provided. The generators are set up in a way that they describe existing data and that the different generators can be compared immediately. ------------------------------------------------------------------ Physics / Computing/ Engineering Content of the project : During his/her stay the summer student will acquaint with MC generators and he will deepen his/her understanding of the Standard Model of particle physcics, especially in a special particle production and decay. He/She will investiagte the tau properties in pp->W->taunu and pp->Z->tautau production using the HepMCAnalysis tools and study the differences originating from the choice of different generators, particle densisty functions and MC tunes. A strategy should be developed how this studies can be used to access systematic uncertainties for the correspoding measurements. ------------------------------------------------------------------ Special Qualifications expected from the student ( Computing,...) : some basic C++ and ROOT knowledge would be appraciated but he/she can also learn it during the summer student program. ------------------------------------------------------------------ Other remarks : - ------------------------------------------------------------------- Supervisor(s) during the project (19/07/11 - 8/09/11) : Name: Sebastian Johnert Tel: 3169 email : sebastian.johnert@desy.de
