Request for a DESY Summer Student in 2011 --------------------------------------------------------------- Name : Nick Styles email :nicholas.styles@desy.de Tel :3103 Room :03/033 DESY-Group/Experiment :ATLAS ---------------------------------------------------------------- Short description of the project the student should work on : Tau performance studies related to fake rates from QCD jets: Many ATLAS physics analyses include hadronically decaying Tau Leptons in their decay chain, which can be identified via several methods. However, 'fake' tau candidates can occur if a QCD jet is misidentified as a tau. Due to the very large QCD cross-section at the LHC, it is crucial to be able to quantify this contribution. The student will work on data-driven methods to extract these fake rates. ------------------------------------------------------------------ Physics / Computing/ Engineering Content of the project : Studying the performance of Tau identification algorithms, QCD jets, at the ATLAS experiment Data/Monte Carlo comparisons Working mostly within a ROOT-based software framework ------------------------------------------------------------------ Special Qualifications expected from the student ( Computing,...) : Some programming experience useful, some basic particle physics, Understanding of the basic principles of physics at hadron colliders ------------------------------------------------------------------ Other remarks : ------------------------------------------------------------------- Supervisor(s) during the project (19/07/11 - 8/09/11) : Name: Nick Styles Tel: 3103 email : nicholas.styles@desy.de
