Short description of the project the student should work on :


The ATLAS experiment main physics goals include searches for new
physics. One of the main topics in these searches are related to
supersymmetry (SUSY).  SUSY analyses of decay signatures with a final
state with two leptons of same flavour and opposite sign and jets can
take advantage of the flavour subtraction method in which allows for a
clean way of measuring susy parameters if SUSY does not violate
R-parity.  Immersed in the group effort, the student will participate
in the preparation of the susy searches strategy for the last quarter
of 2011.  Some possibilities of work include active participation on
the optimization of the search strategy by looking into ways of
reducing important systematics or improve the signal/background ratio.
The contribution is expected to provide relevant inputs to the group
strategy. This work will also allow the student to gain knowledge over
the typical software tools of the ATLAS collaboration and provide
him/her insight of the current efforts done in the SUSY searches at
the LHC.

Physics / Computing/ Engineering Content of the project :

Preparation of the susy searches strategy for the last quarter of
2011. Possibilites range from optimization of the search strategy by
looking into ways of reducing important systematics to improving the
signal/background ratio.

Special Qualifications expected from the student ( Computing,...) :

Some basic knowledge of C++ would be beneficial.
Motivation and willingness to work in a group are an advantage.
