  Short description of the project the student should work on  :

Simulation of high energy collisions in the ATLAS detector requires
significant CPU resources. Large fraction of the simulation time is
spent on simulation of electromagnetic showers in calorimeters.  Fast
simulation models allow to significantly reduce this time.  The
student will participate in the development of the fast simulation
code and tuning it to the data.

  Physics / Computing/ Engineering  Content of the project :

Performance of the ATLAS electromagnetic calorimeters.  Tuning of
shower library simulation using latest ATLAS geometry description
and/or ATLAS data.  Direct hands-on experience with ATLAS software, to
be used for data analysis.  Basic understanding of the detector
operation/performance.  Computing in C++, python. Data analysis in
ROOT.

 Basic knowledge of linux, C++, scripting languages ( preferably python ).
