IT Specialist - Computer Administration for CSSB

The new Centre for Structural Systems Biology (CSSB, www.cssb-hamburg.de) on the DESY Campus in Hamburg combines research methods from biology, physics, chemistry and medicine. Ten different partner institutions, mainly from Northern Germany, are involved in CSSB. International research groups are now working in the new building. To maintain the interface between CSSB and DESY IT infrastructure, we are looking for an experienced and proactive specialist with strong communication skills who works well in a team and thrives in an international environment.

The position

  • User administration: Build and maintain the CSSB internal computing network and its integration into the DESY computing network infrastructure
  • Understand specifications needed to link CSSB partner computers to the respective partner's intranet and then facilitate the establishment of this link
  • Test the operation of installed systems and propose solutions for problems that arise
  • Prepare documentation and guidelines for our partner institutions
  • Support the installation and maintenance of workstation computers in our facilities, including Electron Microscopy and Advanced Light and Fluorescence Facilities in cooperation with CSSB partner institutions

Requirements

  • A degree i.e. a Bachelor in the field of computer science or equivalent knowledge, skills and experience
  • In-depth knowledge of networked IT structures including various networked filesystems (NFS, Samba, BeeGFS)
  • Profound knowledge of standard operating systems (incl. Windows 10, Linux and MacOS) and (web-based) applications as well as their use in distributed, heterogeneous computing network environments
  • Good written and spoken German and English
  • Knowledge of script and programming languages would be useful
