DESY offers challenging tasks in an international setting

For versatile and challenging tasks in an international environment DESY is seeking dedicated employees in the field of natural sciences, engineering and also in the technical and commercial sector.

For our location in Hamburg we are seeking:

PhD Student in Quantum Computing for Particle Physics

Remuneration Group 13

DESY, with its 2700 employees at its two locations in Hamburg and Zeuthen, is one of the world's leading research centres. Its research focuses on decoding the structure and function of matter, from the smallest particles of the universe to the building blocks of life. In this way, DESY contributes to solving the major questions and urgent challenges facing science, society and industry. With its ultramodern research infrastructure, its interdisciplinary research platforms and its international networks, DESY offers a highly attractive working environment in the fields of science, technology and administration as well as for the education of highly qualified young scientists.

The particle physics programme of DESY includes strong contributions to the LHC experiments at CERN, the Belle-II experiment at KEK, the ALPS-II experiment at DESY, and the preparation of future experiments, e.g. LUXE.

The LUXE experiment is set to probe the unexplored frontier of quantum electrodynamics (QED) in the critical field regime using the high-energetic electron beam of the European XFEL. Quantum computers will be used for the reconstruction of the trajectories of the charged particles produced in the high-field QED interactions. The project has access to the quantum computers hosted by IBM. The methods developed in this context will be generic and should find application in many areas of particle and nuclear physics, and potentially in other research areas or aspects of everyday life.

The position

  • Develop quantum computing software for the reconstruction of charged particle tracks
  • Perform simulations of simplified and full detector setups
  • Evaluate expected track reconstruction performance
  • Work in an international team
  • Acquire your doctoral degree in cooperation with the University of Freiburg

  • Master degree in particle physics (preferable), computer science or equivalent
  • Good knowledge or strong interest in particle physics
  • Strong mathematical and programming skills
  • Experience with scientific programming techniques
  • Excellent knowledge of English and teamwork abilities
