Within the Helmholtz Innovation Pool project Tangerine (Towards Next Generation Silicon Detectors), DESY offers a Ph.D position focused on the investigation of a 65 nm CMOS imaging technology to develop the next generation of pixel sensors. The successful candidate will be part of a dynamic team pushing silicon detectors to the next level. The Ph.D. project will cover the full life cycle of detector development, from Monte Carlo and TCAD simulation over sensor design studies to characterization studies of the first prototype generation.

The position

  • Monte Carlo and TCAD simulations of silicon detectors
  • Laboratory characterization of prototypes
  • Test beam integration and measurements

Requirements

  • Master in physics with excellent grades
  • Deep interest in detectors for particle physics, especially in silicon detector technology
  • Good English language skills
  • Very good teamwork, communication and presentation skills
  • Experience in simulation and detector characterization are welcome

DESY in Hamburg does not grant doctoral degrees directly but collaborates with several universities. Candidates for thesis research will have to satisfy the universities terms of admission for doctoral theses.

PhD students receive a monthly salary of half of the payment of the remuneration group 13 TVöD (Federal Government).

The position is limited to 3 years.

Salary and benefits are commensurate with those of public service organisations in Germany. Classification is based upon qualifications and assigned duties.
