Q (H. Kolanoski): Do the good results for "bare DESAG glass" imply that coating is not necessary any more?

A (E. D.): As far as aging is concerned, and in cleaniness conditions achieved in our set-up, this seems to be the case. But in order to obtain a very high rate capability, coating is needed. Compare bare DESAG at 10⁴ Hz/mm² to coated DESAG at 10⁶ Hz/mm².
N.B.: This also depends on the application requirement: in our case, we were aiming at a maximum accumulated change of 20 mC/cm of anode strip.

Q (J. Vavra): Perhaps, your idea of heating of the stainless steel tubing to outgas the pollutants could be expanded to other experiments. Of course, during the outgasing procedure, one has to bypass the chamber. After all, this is what the vacuum people are already doing with the beam line components...

A (E. D.): I completely agree. We were really convinced of that after having taken some pictures of the inner part of the gas tubes by means of an electron microscope.
