Minutes of the Phone-Meeting, December 3, 07h00 (CET) ======================================================== In this meeting the agenda of the coming workshop was discussed. Monday will be dominated by a session with talks from the running experiments, in line with the template detailing the information that should be reported. This can be broken down to: * How analysis is done within the collaboration * Data Analysis Models * Data Conservation prospects * Collaboration prospects In particular, the third point was discussed, and the question raised of who will pay for the conservation effort and storage of data and software. It was suggested that the economical model is important as we will need the funding agencies to be involved. It was also pointed out that the conservation prospects and model do not have to exist already, and that individual experiments should discuss and present their ideas. From this discussion it was proposed that sister experiments (ee, ep, pp) should meet on the Monday and present the result of their discussions on the Wednesday. These ideas maybe also lead to or at least cover the possibility of a general data format. In terms of collaboration prospects, it was agreed that this is another important aspect that should be presented by the experiments, that is to describe expected timescales, manpower and scientific output. The list of experiments currently on the agenda is: H1, ZEUS, CDF, D0, BaBar, Belle, BES-II and (recently added after the meeting) CLEO. Whether or not LEP experiments should be included in the Monday session was discussed, and it was felt that they are better served on Tuesday, where previous attempts at data conservation are discussed. It was pointed out that with running experiments there is still a chance for the model to evolve, whereas LEP data was sometimes saved on a laptop as is. A talk on LEP experience could be on which mistakes to avoid, again, better for Tuesday. The second part of Monday will be dedicated to talks on computing centres and data storage, withe some technical talks. As mentioned above, Tuesday's talks will address past experiences, and it was suggested that some more experiments (ARGUS..?) were invited for more input. Certainly astrophysics was listed as an area that should be tapped for information (GLAST, Auger..), and some labs like Fermilab have good relations to be sourced. The second half of Tuesday will be dedicated to on going projects and funding schemes on data conservation, and include a talk from SPIRES. The agenda for Wednesday is still pretty open, and will be built by the flow of the workshop as essentially a session of discussions. Some presentations of the results of the discussions between the sister experiments is foreseen, and we should try to detect directions for the work to come. The aim should be a blue-print for the document to be prepared for the summer. Practicalities for arriving at the workshop were briefly outlined, and potential participants were invited to register now.
