UNIVERSITY OF HAMBURG

Faculty:              Mathematics, Informatics und Natural Science

Department:     Physics

Institute:            Institute for Experimental Physics

The university has a position open for a

post-doc research associate

(wissenschaftliche/r Mitarbeiter/in in einem post-doc-ArbeitsverhŠltnis)

in

Experimental High Energy Physics (CMS experiment).

Salary is according to German standard TV-L 13. The position calls for 39 hours per week and is limited to three years (see also ¤ 2 of the Academic Fixed-Term Contract Law (Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz)).

The university intends to increase the number of women amongst its academic personnel and expressly encourages qualified women to apply. In compliance with the Hamburg Equal Opportunity Law, preference will be given to qualified female applicants.

Responsibilities:

The research associateÕs duties include academic service within the respective academic department or institute. As a part of their contract, research associates will have the opportunity to conduct independent research and further their academic education as well as acquire teaching experience. Moreover, these duties should assist associates in enhancing and increasing their academic achievements; therefore at least one-third of the set working hours will be made available for the associateÕs own academic work*.

Areas of Responsibility:

We expect a strong contribution to our research on the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC in both data analysis and detector development, in particular the development of a new pixel detector for the CMS experiment at the LHC. Analysis of CMS data should focus on Higgs searches or Supersymmetry. Interested candidates will be offered the opportunity for own research projects and supervision of students.

Our group of about 50 people actively participates in data analysis as well as development of pixel and strip detectors of the CMS experiment. Third party funding is available through the federal initiative Forschungsschwerpunkt FSP-102 ÒPhysics with the CMS ExperimentÒ by the German ministry for education and research (BMBF), through the Excellence Cluster ÒConnecting Particles with the CosmosÒ by the State of Hamburg and through the Sonderforschungsbereich SFB-676 ÒParticles, Strings and the early UniverseÒ by the German Science Foundation (DFG). Further groups of the Department of Physics are engaged in neutrino physics, astroparticle physics, accelerator development and theoretical particle physics as well as astronomy, photon science and nano science.

A close collaboration exists with research groups in experimental and theoretical physics of DESY, which is located on the same campus.

Requirements:

Applicants are required to hold an academic degree in physics plus doctoral degree. An excellent research record is expected, ideally in both data analysis at particle colliders and detector development, but also other outstanding candidates will be considered. Strong competence in laboratory measurements, detector commissioning and calibration will be an advantage.

Preference will be given to disabled applicants with equal qualifications.

Deadline for applications is 15.02.2012. Later applications are accepted until the position is filled. Interested candidates are requested to submit a CV, a summary of professional experience and a statement of research interests together with at least 2 names for recommendation letters to:  Prof. Dr. Peter Schleper, peter.schleper@physik.uni-hamburg.de.

For more detailed information, please contact:

Prof. Dr. P. Schleper, Tel. +49 (0)40 8998 2957, www.desy.de/~schleper.
