Nobel Prize winner addresses summer school

Structural biologist Ada Yonath awarded Roentgen Medal at 3. RACIRI Summer School

This week, some 70 participants attended the third summer school jointly held by the Röntgen-Ångström Cluster (RAC) and the Ioffe Röntgen Institute (IRI). This year’s event, on the island of Rügen, has been organised by DESY and focuses on the investigation of dynamic processes such as photosynthesis using time-resolved measurements with X-rays and neutron radiation. Existing as well as future facilities promise to yield revolutionary insights into the nanocosm with the help of such technologies. The RACIRI Summer School (www.raciri.org) is being held in Germany for the first time this year.

Prof. Ada Yonath was awarded the Roentgen Medal by the director of the Roentgen Museum in Remscheid, Dr. Uwe Busch, Remscheid's mayor Burkhard Mast-Weisz and the honorary chairman of the Association of the Friends and Sponsors of the Roentgen Museum, Prof. Christian Streffer (from left to right).
One of the highlights of the event was the keynote address held by the Israeli structural biologist Ada Yonath, who was awarded the Nobel Prize in 2009 for her examination of the ribosome. She had used modern methods of X-ray crystallography to determine the precise structure of these protein factories that operate inside biological cells. Some of her groundbreaking work took place at DESY. At the RACIRI Summer School, the mayor of Remscheid, Burkhard Mast-Weisz, presented the city’s renowned Roentgen Medal to Ada Yonath for the year 2014, in recognition of her achievements.

The RACIRI Summer School is a joint initiative by Germany, Russia and Sweden in the field of material and nano-sciences with a regional focus on major facilities in the Baltic region. The Röntgen-Ångström Cluster (www.rontgen-angstrom.eu) is a collaboration between German and Swedish research centres; the Ioffe Röntgen Institute (www.ioffe-roentgen.org) is a German-Russian research cooperation aiming to promote collaboration between large research facilities.
