DESY awarded as bicycle-friendly employer

Research centre receives first gold certificate according to EU-wide standard in Hamburg

DESY has been certified as a bicycle-friendly employer by the Allgemeiner Deutscher Fahrradclub ADFC bicycle club. The research centre was the first employer in Hamburg to receive the certificate, which is being awarded by ADFC since 2017 according to an EU-wide uniform standard, in gold. “DESY has recognized the positive benefits of promoting cycling,” said Susanne Elfferding, auditor and consultant at the ADFC Federal Association. “The bicycle culture at the workplace combines several advantages: it is modern, future-oriented and promotes employee loyalty and team spirit.”

What distinguishes a bicycle-friendly company? For example, participation in the “Cycle to work” campaign, regular activities such as a cyclists' breakfast, individual route advice or company outings by bike earn points. In the area of infrastructure, employers are right when they roof, illuminate, design barrier-free bicycle parking spaces and place them close to the entrance. Changing rooms and showers also count. In the service area, offers for bicycle repairs, seasonal bicycle checks or the purchase of service bicycles score points. In the coordination area, employers can score points with the use of bicycles, freight bikes or bicycle trailers in their own logistics.

Employers who systematically promote cycling and have themselves certified, benefit from this in various ways, the ADFC emphasised. It does not only improve their image and lower costs, as the infrastructure for bicycles is much cheaper than for car parking spaces. Above all, however, such employers gain motivated employees: employees riding to work by bike have on average one third fewer sick days and are more satisfied, balanced and productive, explained the bicycle club.
