Two New Helmholtz Young Investigators Groups at DESY

With their outstanding proposals, Dr. Isabell Melzer-Pellmann und Dr. Alexei Raspereza have been selected this year to form two new Helmholtz Young Investigators Groups at DESY. Both research projects deal with the physics from the first LHC data.
Isabell Melzer-Pellmann and her investigators group will search for the evidence of supersymmetric particles in the CMS detector. With the help of supersymmetry it would be possible to unify the four fundamental forces in nature and to explain dark matter. The group will also collaborate in the developments of detectors for future accelerators. Isabell Melzer-Pellmann will work at DESY and at the University of Hamburg.
Alexei Raspereza and his group will study the Higgs mechanism at the CMS experiment. He will optimise the verification possibilities of heavy quarks in the detector and participate in the development of new detector components for future application. His partner university is in Karlsruhe.
Both scientists are funded with the sum of 250 000 Euros for a period of five years; half of it coming from the Helmholtz Association and the other half from DESY and the universities.
The Helmholtz Young Investigators Groups offer the possibility to young scientists to do independent research at a Helmholtz Research Centre with close connection to a university.
